Dental Crowns: What Are They and When Might You Need One?
A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that fits over a tooth to help strengthen, protect, and restore its shape and function. Crowns are designed to look and function much like natural teeth and can be used to restore teeth that have been significantly damaged or weakened.
When Might a Tooth Need a Crown?
Your dentist may recommend a crown when a tooth needs more protection or restoration than a filling can provide. A crown may be recommended for a tooth that is:
Significantly weakened or damaged
Cracked or fractured
Heavily restored with a large filling
Worn down
In need of protection after a root canal
The goal of a crown is to help protect the remaining tooth structure while restoring the tooth's function and appearance.
What Is the Crown Process Like?
At Luce Line Family Dental, the crown process currently takes two appointments, typically about a week apart.
First Appointment
During your first appointment, the tooth is prepared to make room for the crown. We then take the necessary impressions or digital scans so your permanent crown can be custom-made to fit your tooth.
A temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth while your permanent crown is being made. The temporary crown helps protect the tooth and allows you to use it normally while you wait for your final restoration.
Second Appointment
At your second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is carefully checked for fit, appearance, and bite. Once everything looks and feels right, the crown is securely placed.
How Do You Care for a Crown?
A crowned tooth still needs the same daily care as your natural teeth. Continue brushing twice a day, cleaning between your teeth daily, and visiting your dental team for regular checkups and cleanings.
While a crown can protect and strengthen a tooth, the tooth underneath it can still develop decay or other problems if it isn't properly cared for.
What About Same-Day Crowns?
We're currently working toward offering same-day crowns at Luce Line Family Dental. Our goal is to eventually provide the ability to complete the crown process in a single visit, making treatment more convenient for our patients.
Until then, most crown treatments will continue to require two appointments about a week apart.
